Knockbrack

Unclassified Megalithic Tomb

It was a great thrill to finally see this megalithic tomb. From a certain angle the 3.5 metre long capstone is very similar to the one at Cleggan not too far from here. This unclassified monument is aligned E-W. The chamber is 2.3 metre in length and almost a metre wide. There are three low stones on either side of the chamber. At the western end there is a large slab that may have been a second capstone, but this is just speculation. The tomb is now incorporated into a field fence. A simply beautiful location with splendid views of Inishbofin.

Situated: From Clifden take the N59 north towards Westport. After 5. 3 kilometres take a left for Cleggan. 6.5K turn right at sign for Cnoc Breac B&B. Go to the end. Walk north to the end of the beach.
